VITICULTURE
The Elim region is renowned for its crisp ocean breezes and koffieklip soil, but it’s a challenging place to grow vines. Only those intrepid enough to take on the rough southerly elements will reap the rewards that come from growing vines under stress – stressed vines, miraculously, produce far more pleasing fruit and, as a result, far richer wines. It’s the ‘strength in adversity’ mantra that makes for the distinct character and quality of the wines in this region.
A TALE OF
TERROIR
Terroir is a huge part of the tale. Besides the breezes and the chill factor, it’s the koffieklip, shale, granite and quartzite soil composition that informs the fruity and vegetal aromatics of Elim grapes. Terroir – particularly that of soil – is intimately linked to taste. Small stones cemented in iron-rich clay make up the distinctive koffieklip soil, which provides decent drainage along with good water retention – all essential for successful vine growth.

Our Monarch, a rich blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, sourced from prime vineyards of the Western Cape coastal region, is packed with blackcurrant and liquorice, with a hint of dark chocolate and ground coffee. There’s an explosion of fruit on the palate, balanced by well-integrated oak and backed by elegant tannins.
